Biology Class Trip to Cornell
Biology Class Trip to CornellOn April 3 and 4th, Ms. Schindler’s Biology class took a trip to Cornell University. There, they worked with CIBT’s science professors to complete a lab, using real materials to prove the paternity of two cases. The students chopped DNA up using restriction enzymes, placed them in the wells of a gel they created, turned the electricity on and watched the DNA separate by size of fragments. When the tests were complete, the students could determine if the suspects in the two cases were indeed the biological father of the child in question by lining up the resulting DNA fingerprints and looking for matches. The students learned that science has exciting and fun tools used to understand amazing concepts, but if you want valid data, your technique needs to be meticulous.
