Greene Student/Athletes Named WCDO Players of the Year
Nolan and Brooke
Greene varsity field hockey player Brooke Austin and boys' soccer player Nolan Butler were named WCDO radio's Player of the Year for their respective sports. Brooke and Nolan, both seniors, received their plaques from WCDO Sports Director Nate Lull on Tuesday, Nov. 26.
Brooke was the goalie that backboned Greene's magical run to the Section IV Class C field hockey championship. Her 11 saves, including a stop of a penalty stroke helped the Trojans, seeded eighth of eight teams coming into the sectional tournament, to a 1-0 upset over top-seed and five-time defending NYS Class C champion Whitney Point. Ten days later, Greene captured the Section IV Class C title with a victory over Newark Valley. Brooke will be attending St. John Fisher College in Rochester in the fall where she plans on playing field hockey.
Hard work this off-season paid off for Nolan, as he helped the boys' soccer team to another Midstate Athletic Conference championship and a berth in the Section IV Class C semifinals, where the Trojans lost a heartbreaking game to Trumansburg in penalty kick overtime. Nolan was named to the first-team All-Midstate Athletic Conference all-star team after being shut out of the postseason honors. Nolan has yet to make a final college choice but has been accepted to several schools and plans on continuing his soccer career.
