Superintendent Letter Addressing School Calendar Change for Grades UPK-6th

Dear Parents/Guardians of Students in UPK-6:

There is a change to the school calendar.  This change impacts all students in grades UPK-6 and will begin on October 21st.  Our elementary students will have half-days on the following dates:

Wednesday October 21

Wednesday November 4 & 18

Wednesday December 2 & 16

On these dates, students at the Primary and Intermediate Schools will be released at 11:00 after having lunch.   Sixth grade students at the Middle School will be released at 11:15 after having lunch.

The reason we are doing this is because our first two staff days in September were primarily used for COVID protocol review, new mandates from the state, and safety training. Therefore, our teachers did not have an opportunity to receive necessary professional development training. This new training is required for the new platforms our students need to know, should we be forced to go to remote learning.  It is critical that our teachers be fully up to speed so they are able to effectively teach our younger students using these new skills.

We selected Wednesdays in an effort to help those families who have older students at home who may be able to assist with child care. We acknowledge that this scenario may not be optimal for all families, but it is the best solution for our children at this time. We have also worked with the YMCA after school program to ensure they are able to provide daycare on these days for students enrolled in that program.

If you have questions regarding the upcoming half-days, please contact the appropriate building principal.

Sincerely

Timothy Calice
