Elementary school years set the tone for developing the skills, knowledge, and attitudes necessary for our children to become healthy and productive adults. Elementary school counselors work with the goal of assisting in the development of all students. In order to meet student needs, counselors work as a team with educators, parents, and community members to create a caring atmosphere whereby children's needs are met through prevention, early identification, and intervention. In addition to the services Elementary Guidance provides, School Counselor services at Greene include:

-Academic and Personal/Social Development of each student

-Character Education Development (including classroom and school wide)

-Classroom Guidance Lessons (Kelso's Conflict Management System, Kindness Bucket Filling, Friendship, Anti-Bullying etc.)

-Student's day-to-day feelings/needs

-Response to Intervention Coordinator

-Olweus Team Member

-K-5 504 Coordinator

-Child Abuse Prevention lessons

504 Plans
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is a broad civil rights law, which protects the rights of individuals with handicaps in programs and activities. It identifies all school-age children who meet the definition of a qualified handicapped person; i.e. (1) has or (2) has had a physical or mental impairment, which substantially limits a major life activity, or (3) is regarded as handicapped by others. Major life activities include walking, seeing, hearing, speaking, breathing, learning, working, caring for oneself, and performing manual tasks. The handicapped condition need only substantially limit one major life activity in order for the student to be eligible (such as learning).

The 504 Committee is a group of individuals knowledgeable about the student. Their purpose is to provide intervention strategies, supports, and to recommend services, which will allow the student to perform with greater success.

If you have any questions about your child's 504 plan, or 504 plans in general, please do not hesitate to contact me.
